Petrified Forest, Arizona: Campfire Coffee and Oats

I can’t tell y’all how much I enjoy cooking while camping, there is seriously nothing better. Being isolated in the middle of a desert, lounging under millions of stars, sitting in complete silence besides whispering conversation… your senses are heightened at all levels. You hear a busslin’ in a bush a half mile away and you think Freddy Krueger is after your ass, not kidding. I always look forward to breakfast though- my 10 year old self that is afraid of the dark recedes and I am reassured by watching that rising sun… and of course, a hot cup of joe. Z and I swear by our moka pot- it is most definitely the best vessel to make coffee in, a whole lot more convenient, less mess, etc. On top of all that good stuff, it’s a game changer while camping… it’s a one stop shop- boil water, percolates through your ground coffee, and then you’re done. Taking advantage of that precious ground coffee that lets over after you’ve had your cup for the morning, fill back up the water reservoir, bring to a boil, and use your diluted coffee to make your oatmeal.

tools: moka pot, camper stove/induction (if camping)

ingredients:

1C rolled oats

1C coffee

1T nutella

1/2 banana

1/2C of your favorite trail mix// our favorite: almond, walnut, dried cranberries, peanut butter m&ms, chocolate covered pistachios

  • Stir
  • fold in pieces of banana

easy, peasy, lemon squeezy
